For Sale: BETTER THAN A FEATHERWEIGHT!!! This Vintage Sewing Machine is a "clone" of the Singer Model 99 with a lightweight aluminum body, all metal mechanical parts, bigger and stronger than a Singer Featherweight model 221, yet this one weighs just over 11 pounds, just about the same weight as a Featherweight but MORE sewing power and more room under the 'harp' than a Featherweight. It is a "three-quarter size" sewing machine, almost identical in size and shape to the Singer 99 model sewing machines. Includes foot controller and some attachments and a custom-made carry bag. Has built-in reverse function and feed-dogs drop for free-motion work.
The machine is "badged" with the name "Robt. I. Cohen Deluxe", probably from the Robert I. Cohen chain of clothing stores which was a large chain of department stores in Texas and the south-west USA in the 1940s. The Robt. I. Cohen Company was started in 1889 as a men's clothing store in Galveston Texas that grew to become one of the largest department stores in the Southwest with stores in several Texas cities, and was purchased by Federated Department stores in 1945. The gold decals with the "Robt. I. Cohen" name are faded but legible. It says "Made in Occupied Japan" on the back of the machine under the motor, which indicates that it was made sometime most likely between 1945 - 1952. It has an art-deco design face-plate and delicate artful gold decals which are in near-perfect condition.
Super clean and works great!!! It has been restored to near-mint operating condition, and cosmetically it is in wonderful clean and shiny condition, with just a few nicks in the black enamel mostly on the handwheel. Includes a box of attachments. It takes standard "low shank" attachments and class 66 bobbins and 15x1 needles, all of which are commonly available for normal prices.
A PERFECT MACHINE FOR A QUILTER, easy to carry to quilting events and large enough to do projects that are a bit too big to easily work on the somewhat smaller Singer Featherweight 221 model. I made a base for it out of styrofoam and a carry-bag to fit it, and the whole package weighs just over 12 pounds with the foot controller and box of attachments. If you've been looking for a Featherweight, you should seriously consider this machine as an equally portable but stronger alternative, and more unique, or just a great addition to your collection of Vintage Sewing Machines... you won't be sorry!
These lightweight Singer 99 Clones are rather uncommon and almost impossible to find for sale... Get it now before someone else scoops it up! This could be the best sewing machine purchase you ever make! Reluctantly, I am selling it because I need the money more than I need this sweet machine. I have four kids in college and three more at home, and I'm trying to get enough money to pay to bring my older kids home from college for Christmas. Firm price, otherwise I'll just keep it.
