My story
When Benito looks at you with those giant saucer eyes, it's hard not to melt. His eyes are so pretty, we swear he must be sneaking on some eyeliner when nobody's looking. He has one adorably expressive ear and one stoic one, and between the two of them, you can always tell what Benito's thinking. And when he needs something, he gently paws at your knee to let you know. Benito has a real zest for life and loves to go on long walks and hikes and would likely make a great running partner. Benito also LOVES to play and tennis balls and rope toys are his favorite things. He loves to play fetch and even tosses the ball around for himself and has a collection of toys in his foster home that he's great at keeping himself entertained with. Benito does get pretty amped up during playtime, but once he gets it out of his system, he's relaxed and chill and happy to be a couch potato. As energetic as he is, Benito is the sweetest snuggler and likes to drape himself over your chest and snore softly. Benito learns commands very quickly and clearly wants to please his person. He's a very intuitive pup and seems to understand what's expected of him and obliges. If you want him to stop doing something, all you have to do is tell him and he instantly stops. He's ready to play when you feel like playing and stops on a dime when it's time to chill and lays his head in your lap. Benito wasn't crazy about kennel life and took it out on his bed and toys, but since spending time in his current foster home, he hasn't exhibited any of that destructive behavior. He's a completely different dog out of shelter and has transformed into a happy little mush-ball. He's fully house and crate-trained and goes into his crate easily and never makes a peep. Benito is friendly with meeting new people and may also do well with a doggie sibling that shares his rough and rowdy play style. He already knows 'sit', is working on 'drop' and learning all kinds of skills in APA!'s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Benito has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Benito is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told 'free,' coming when called and 'Place', which means he will go to a specific place in your home on command. Once Benito successfully completes all the skills on his training plan, he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Benito is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Benito after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together.
